in Onions

I put my new onion plants in the ground today.

It felt great to be out in the sun again. The weather finally shows signs of warming up. It got into the low 50’s this afternoon. Shirtsleeve weather. It was great!

This little warm spells has finally melted off the snow.

This means the ground is much too wet for tilling or any of that typical ground preparation work. So how did I plant in the wet ground?

Well, I didn’t.

I put loads of mulch on my garden. Grass clippings, chopped up leaves from the fall. When I plant tomatoes I just pull that mulch sheet back and stick the plants right in the ground.

Put the onions are too little for that.

So I went to Walmart and got a few bags of garden soil. I mixed in a bit of peat moss and spread this out right on top of the mulch layer. I then planted the onions into this store bought soil mix.

This gives the onions enough dirt to hold them securely and lots of decomposing goodies underneath to feed them as they grow.

So the wait is over. The garden season has begun.

WooHoo!
